About Raster to vector

Raster (or bitmap) images store a grid of pixels. Vector images store shapes. Converting from raster to vector means finding the edges in the image and redrawing them as paths, so the result can be scaled, edited, cut or engraved.

The tracer here segments the image into colour regions and fits smooth curves to every border once, so shapes never overlap or leave hairline gaps, a common problem with older auto-trace tools.

Tips for the best result

Quality in, quality out

Tracing rebuilds what's in the picture. A clean source around 1000 px gives far better results than a screenshot of a screenshot.

What's the difference between raster and vector?

Raster images are made of pixels and lose quality when enlarged. Vector images are made of mathematical shapes and stay sharp at any size.

Will it make a blurry image sharp?

Edges are redrawn as clean shapes, so a slightly soft logo comes back crisp. Detail that isn't in the picture can't be invented, though.
