About SVG for laser cutting

Lasers follow paths. A good laser file has closed outlines for cutting, no tiny specks the head wastes time on, no double lines that burn edges, and colours split into layers so you can set cut, score and engrave separately.

This traces your image into exactly that: closed shapes, shared edges written once, one layer per colour. For engraving line drawings, Single line traces each stroke as one path down its middle.

Tips for the best result

Cut vs engrave

Black & white gives filled shapes, good for cutting and fill engraving. Single line gives centre lines, good for scoring and line engraving.

Glowforge

Upload the SVG in the Glowforge app; each colour becomes a step you can set to cut, score or engrave.

LightBurn and xTool

Import SVG or DXF. Each colour comes in on its own layer.

Check sizes

Set the final size in your laser software. Very thin parts under the beam width won't survive cutting.

Questions

Is it free?

Yes. Converting and downloading is free, with no signup and no watermark. Everything runs in your browser, so there's no queue and no daily limit.

SVG or DXF for my laser?

Glowforge and xTool Creative Space prefer SVG. LightBurn reads both. CAD and CNC software usually wants DXF.

Can I engrave a photo?

Photo engraving works best from the photo itself, using your laser software's dithering. Tracing suits logos, drawings and silhouettes.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Your browser does the conversion on your own device, so the file never reaches our server. That also makes it fast: there's no upload or download wait.
