SVGFormat vs Vector Magic
Vector Magic is one of the best-known vectorizers. You can upload and preview as many images as you like, then subscribe or buy the desktop app to download. SVGFormat traces in your browser, so it costs us almost nothing per image and the download is free. Here's how the two compare, based on Vector Magic's own site as of 1 November 2026.
| SVGFormat | Vector Magic | |
|---|---|---|
| Price to download a file | Free | $9.99/month online, or $295 once for desktop |
| Free previews | Unlimited, no watermark | Unlimited upload and preview; downloads need a subscription |
| Where your image is processed | On your device, never uploaded | Online edition: uploaded to their servers |
| Largest image traced | 2,400 px on the long side | 2 megapixels online; higher on desktop |
| SVG, PDF, EPS | Free | With a subscription or desktop licence |
| DXF and AI | Free | Desktop edition only |
| Embroidery files (PES, DST, JEF) | Free | Not listed |
| Batch conversion | Free, up to 50 at once | Desktop edition only |
| Edit the shapes after tracing | Colours and background only | Yes, a built-in vector editor |
| Installable desktop app | No, browser only | Yes |
When Vector Magic is the better choice
- You want to fix individual shapes by hand before downloading: its editor does this, and ours doesn't.
- You want an installed desktop app rather than a browser tool.
- You trace very large images often: its desktop edition is built for higher resolutions than our 2,400 px limit.
When SVGFormat is the better choice
- You only need a few files and don't want a monthly subscription.
- The image is private or belongs to a client, and you'd rather it never left your computer.
- You need DXF or AI files without paying for a desktop licence.
- You need embroidery files, or a free batch of up to 50 images.
The quickest way to decide is to try both on the same image. Drop it above: you'll have the result in a second, and every other tool works the same way.
Other Vector Magic alternatives
Vector Magic isn't the only option. Vectorizer.AI charges the same monthly price and focuses on shape fitting, and our comparison of eight converters covers free tools like PicSVG and PNGtoSVG too.
Questions
Is there a free alternative to Vector Magic?
Yes. SVGFormat downloads free in every format, with no watermark, signup or subscription. The conversion runs on your device, so there's no server cost per image to pass on.
Is Vector Magic free?
You can upload and preview for free, but downloading your own results needs a subscription ($9.99 a month) or the desktop edition ($295 once), according to its pricing page on 1 November 2026.
Is the quality as good as Vector Magic?
We haven't published a head-to-head test, so we won't claim it is. SVGFormat works well on logos, icons, clipart and line art, and it's free to check: run your own image through both and compare.
Can I use the files commercially?
Yes, as long as you have the rights to the original picture.
Vector Magic is a trademark of its owner. SVGFormat isn't affiliated with or endorsed by them.
